Uno dei Gis di riferimento al mondo, nato inizialmente in America per scopi militari, è attualmente utilizzato in particolar modo in ambienti governativi, commerciali e accademici.
E' nato sotto sistemi GNU/Linux, ma ne è stato fatto il porting anche in Windows. Attualmente è in fase di sviluppo una versione nativa per Windows.

Commonly referred to as GRASS, this is a Geographic Information System (GIS) used for geospatial data management and analysis, image processing, graphics/maps production, spatial modeling, and visualization. GRASS is currently used in academic and commercial settings around the world, as well as by many governmental agencies and environmental consulting companies. GRASS is official project of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation.

Over the past decade Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have evolved from a highly specialized niche to a technology that affects nearly every aspect of our lives, from finding driving directions to managing natural disasters.

GRASS GIS is a general purpose raster/vector GIS combined with integrated image processing and data visualization subsystems. It includes a large number of modules for management, processing, analysis and visualization of georeferenced data.
Unlike most proprietary GIS, GRASS provides complete access to its internal structure and algorithms. Advanced users who want to write their own GIS modules may therefore learn from existing modules as well as by reading the "GRASS Programmer's Manual''. The documented GRASS GIS libraries with the Application Programming Interface (API) make the new module development more efficient and allow to integrate new functionality into GRASS. Applications can be also written with shell scripts to automate the GIS workflow.

Gis multipiattaforma (Linux, Unix, Mac OSX, e Windows) con licenza Open Source.
E' di facile utilizzo rispetto a tanti Gis commerciali, oltre che più leggero e con una interfaccia grafica intuitiva, anche se non presenta le estese funzioni di certi software.
Può però essere installato un supporto per GRASS e con questo utilizzare i tools di GRASS stesso.

Caratteristiche:

    • network analysis,
    • and many others;
  5. publish your map on the internet using the export to Mapfile capability (requires a webserver with UMN MapServer installed);
  6. adapt Quantum GIS to your special needs through the extensible plugin architecture.

Developed by the Wisconsin DNR using the TatukGIS Developer Kernel, this was released publicly and updated through 2005, when changes in the license made public distribution impossible without royalty payments. Too bad - even two years later, it’s a decent freeware GIS, and certainly would have been a lot better by now.

  • Measure areas and distances. fGIS reports distances and areas in English units (feet, miles and acres) and metric units. Area and perimeter measurement fields can be added to data tables and updated automatically.
  • Display data at user-specified scales.
  • View maps in 3D.
  • Map live GPS positions from any connected GPS unit with NMEA output (beta).
  • Extract geo-referenced images of selected portions of a screen display.
  • Export part of a vector layer and save it as a new file.
  • Manage large data sets organized in dBase tables with the “Load Library Layer” utility.
  • Join dBase and Access tables to shapefile attribute tables.
  • Create point shapefiles from comma delimited text files with x|y coordinates.
  • Convert Geographic WGS84 coordinate shapefiles to and from worldwide UTM zones and Wisconsin Transverse Mercator.
  • Print the map with three flexible output options. The Simple Print command will add a map title, subtitle, footer and the scale to the page. The Send Map to Word command will send an image of the view at a user specified resolution and scale to Microsoft® Word. A third option through the Export Image tool will send the map to a technical illustration/page layout module called Diagram Designer. You can add headers, legends, annotations and non-spatial symbols from template palettes in the Diagram Designer module.
  • Save WMF files for use in publishing programs.

Software di origine spagnola, tradotto anche in italiano, caratterizzato da una semplice interfaccia.

gvSIG is a tool oriented to manage geographic information. It is characterized by a user-friendly interface, with a quick access to the most usual raster and vector formats. In the same view it includes local as well as remote data through a WMS, WCS or WFS source.

It is aimed at users of geographic information, whether professionals or civil servants (city councils, councils, regional councils or ministries) from any part of the world ( at the moment its interface is in Spanish, Valencian, English, Basque, Gallego, Czech, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Romanian, Polish and Portuguese), in addition to being free.

Given its Free Software nature (open source) it is highly interesting for the international community of developers and, in particular, for university settings due to its R&D&I component. In fact, special emphasis has been placed on the expansion of the project so that potential developers can easily expand the functions of the application, as well as develop completely new applications from the libraries used in gvSIG (as long as they comply with the GPL license).

uDig is an open source desktop GIS development platform. It is also a working open source desktop GIS application.
uDig is an open source (LGPL) desktop application framework, built with Eclipse Rich Client (RCP) technology.

Design Philosophy

DIVA-GIS can be used to map and analyze biological distribution data, such as can be provided by natural history collections and genetic resources collections. Typically, the distribution data would refer to locations where different species, phenotypes or genotypes have been observed, and perhaps collected.
These data can be analyzed to identify areas of high diversity; to predict the chance of finding a species in areas that have not been explored; to study the distribution of certain traits of interest; and to select and design of sites for in situ conservation.

SAGA – System for Automated Geoscientific Analyses- is a hybrid GIS software. The first objective of SAGA is to give (geo-)scientists an effective but easy learnable platform for the implementation of geoscientific methods, which is achieved by SAGA's unique Application Programming Interface (API). The second is to make these methods accessible in a user friendly way. This is mainly done by the Graphical User Interface (GUI). MapWindow is more than just a data viewer. It is an extensible geographic information system.

MapWindow includes standard GIS data visualization features as well as DBF attribute table editing, shapefile editing, and data converters. Dozens of standard GIS formats are supported, including Shapefiles, GeoTIFF, ESRI ArcInfo ASCII and binary grids.
Getting the Software:
The MapWindow GIS software is freely available to download from the MapWindow website.
In addition, there are further Plug Ins to add capability to the base software for download from the site.

MapWindow GIS software installer will provide a range of the key plug-ins required for use, including GIS Tools, Shapefile Editor plus others. There are additional plug-ins available from the MapWindow website downloads page, or from links in the Sample Code Forum. Spatial Analysis and Decision Assistance (SADA) is free software that incorporates tools from environmental assessment fields into an effective problem solving environment. These tools include integrated modules for visualization, geospatial analysis, statistical analysis, human health risk assessment, ecological risk assessment, cost/benefit analysis, sampling design, and decision analysis. The capabilities of SADA can be used independently or collectively to address site specific concerns when characterizing a contaminated site, assessing risk, determining the location of future samples, and when designing remedial action. A fully functional freeware version is available on the download page of this web site. SADA is developed in The Institute for Environmental Modeling at the University of Tennessee .
SADA is an evolving freeware product targeted to individuals performing environmental assessments in support of decision-making. The primary objective is to create a user friendly software package for environmental characterization and decision-making. This problem solving environment applies and integrates a number of algorithms that can either be used in a stand alone fashion or in the direct support of performing a site assessment. The software processes and produces information in a clear, transparent manner, directly supporting decision processes, and can serve as a communication tool between technical and non-technical audiences. The end result is that SADA can be used to facilitate decisions about a given site in a quick and cost effective manner. SADA has a strong emphasis on the spatial distribution of contaminant data and is therefore best suited for anyone who needs to look at data within a spatial context, such as:

Ultimately, our objective is to provide environmental assessors with a unified software package that links practical characterization tools to decision-making capabilities (particularly human health and ecological risk assessment). The integration of the human health risk capabilities of SADA with modules for ecological risk assessment can help accomplish EPA's mission as outlined in the Ecological Research Strategy to: "develop and demonstrate a multiple pathway, multiple chemical model that integrates human health and ecological cumulative exposure and risk assessments." In addition, using the same problem solving environment for human health and ecological risk assessment assures consistency between the two assessment efforts in terms of the data that is used and the decision rules that are addressed. Our intention is to maintain it as a free product that will not depend on other software products (other than Windows).

Gis orientato prevalentemente alla idrogeologia e analisi geomorfologiche del territorio.

JGrass is a free, multi platform, open source GIS based on the famous GIS Grass, developed in Java by CUDAM, Hydrologis and ICENS (so far).

At the moment JGrass (or better its tools) is dedicatated mostly to hydrological and geomophological analyses. This is due to the fact that the main sponsors of the project are the CUDAM and Hydrologis. The involved University department and the tutorship of Riccardo Rigon makes JGrass a very complete piece of software to deal with environmental issues in the field of Hydrology and Morphology.

JGrass moved to the uDig platform to add support for vector data and other sources that were not available in the first releases of JGrass.

Rather than duplicate the effort of uDig and GeoTools, the JGrass team chose to focus on the unique parts of their project (tools, algorithms) and get the basic infrastructure (vectors, formats, reprojection, workbench) from the uDig framework.

The Key Indicator Data System (KIDS) has been developed by the World Agriculture Information Centre (WAICENT) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
KIDS is a software framework that provides the ability to implement thematic information systems that collect, reference, visualize, exchange and disseminate statistical, survey and indicator data. Visualization is possible through tables, mapping, raster images and graphs. Basic GIS overlay and legend editing functions are available for non-GIS users.

KIDS was developed originally for the purpose of collecting, mapping and disseminating food insecurity and vulnerability indicators that are relevant to FIVIMS. The Asia FIVIMS information system, using the KIDS framework, allows the analysis and visual display of data collected at different levels of aggregation, and can help the monitoring and surveillance of the food and nutrition situation over time. Moreover, The software contributes to increased awareness of FIVIMS and improved food security information management and exchange at national, regional and international levels.
From its origin, the KIDS framework has subsequently been used to implement thematic information systems for the collection, monitoring and visualization of livestock production and health, transboundary animal diseases, agricultural land-use, global body mass index, food security and vulnerability, early warning, fisheries statistics, terrestrial ecosystems monitoring, plant genetic resources, country office information, field projects, nutrient response and is used in satellite imagery meteorological systems.

Characteristics and Advantages:
- KIDS is user-friendly mapping software that allows to collect, map and disseminate food insecurity and vulnerability indicators that are relevant to FIVIMS.
- KIDS allows the analysis and visual display of data collected at different levels of aggregation and can help the monitoring and surveillance of the food and nutrition situation over time.

OrbisGIS is a GIS application dedicated to scientific spatial simulation. This cross-platform GIS is developed at French IRSTV institute and is able to manipulate and create vectorial and raster spatial information. OrbisGIS is distributed under GPL 3 license.

Three main axes structure this scientific framework :

OrbisGIS is a part of a more global Spatial Data Infrastructure. It is a mandatory component to anyone who needs to process spatial datas (create, update, process and model) or visualize them. Based on robust and wellknown libraries of the public domain such as JTS (Java Topologie Suite) or ImageJ, it provide the ability to join or visualize 2D vector and/or raster datas. Structure and data model:
In OrbisGIS, spatial data are stored in layers. This abstraction has a typical tabular structure that uses rows to store each of the elements of the data source. This structure is close to the JDBC standard, and, as an example, to the storage format of the spatial data used in PostgreSQL/PostGIS.
Concerning rasters, the storage format is the one that is used by ImageJ.
Data access:
Data access are realized through two libraries:
  • GDMS (Generic Data-sources Management System) is a semantic layer that has the ability to address and manipulate heterogeneous data. It provides both an API and an extended Spatial SQL,
